I am writing on behalf of PLan about the Senate Inquiry into the Management of Defence estate assets.
The inquiry has been extended to 27 February 2027. The committee secretariat confirmed to me on 14 September that, although the formal deadline has passed, the committee has agreed to continue accepting submissions about Lee Point.
This presents a great opportunity for Darwin people and organisations to make submissions and ask for a Darwin hearing and a site visit to Lee Point.
A strong range of submissions from Darwin organisations, experts, elected representatives and residents would demonstrate why the committee needs to make a site visit to Lee Point and hold a hearing here, as the Darwin community has not had the opportunity to present oral evidence as communities in other jurisdictions have.
Would you be willing to make a submission? If so, it would be helpful if it could be lodged as soon as possible, before the committee determines its program for further public hearings or decides again to close submissions .

The terms of reference most relevant to Lee Point are:
(b) the processes for planning and conducting acquisition, management, development, upgrade and disposal of Defence estate assets;
(e) the heritage significance of Defence estate assets and the adequacy of measures to protect that significance during and following divestment, including the impact on veteran and community connections to sites of military service;
(g) consideration of an amended policy framework for the use of surplus Defence land that prioritises alternative public uses over private development; and
(h) any other related matters.
